Working your brain hard at your job may protect your cognition and help prevent dementia as you age. A new study found that having a routine job with little mental stimulation during your 30s to 60s was linked to a higher risk of mild cognitive impairment and dementia after the age of 70. Jobs with high cognitive and interpersonal demands were found to be protective against cognitive decline. Attending college also helped reduce the impact of a repetitive job, although it did not fully negate the risk. Staying actively engaged in life and remaining socially active are also important for protecting against cognitive decline.
